Temporary Power Design and Generator Setup
MECS supplied and positioned two backup generators to support refrigeration, lighting and essential store systems. Load assessments were completed to confirm capacity and distribution, and temporary power arrangements were designed to align with site operations, safety standards and Western Power requirements.
Crane lifts were coordinated to place the generators safely, with cabling routed to avoid customer areas, loading zones and traffic paths. All equipment was installed for safe access, clear isolation and efficient demobilisation.
Live Changeover and Monitoring
On the morning of the works, MECS managed the controlled changeover from mains supply to generator power before the network outage commenced. The team:
- Verified connection points and protections
- Confirmed live loads on refrigeration and essential circuits
- Implemented continuous monitoring for load, voltage and performance
MECS personnel remained on-site throughout the day to supervise the system and respond immediately to any operational changes.
Return To Mains Power
Once Western Power completed the upgrade, MECS executed a staged transition back to mains power. The changeover was completed without interruption to store operations. Generators were isolated, disconnected and removed, with all temporary infrastructure cleared from site.
Project Challenges And Solutions
Zero Downtime Requirement
IGA Maddington needed uninterrupted trading. MECS sequenced all works around store hours, customer flow and deliveries to ensure no impact on operations.
Protection Of High Value Stock
Refrigeration continuity was critical to prevent spoilage of approximately $100,000 worth of stock. System checks, redundancy considerations and live monitoring controlled this risk.
Tight One Day Program
All activities, from mobilisation to demobilisation, were executed within the scheduled outage window through upfront planning, clear roles and alignment with Western Power.
Client Response
The solution delivered uninterrupted operation for IGA Maddington throughout the network upgrade period. The store experienced no loss of operating time and no stock loss, with all essential services performing as required.
