Whaleback and Kalgan’s Dry Mess Facilities

Scope of Work

We completed an electrical upgrade across the Whaleback and Kalgan dry mess facilities, working through older infrastructure and bringing the spaces into line with the upgraded layouts. The job included temporary power, strip-out of redundant services, new cable containment, lighting upgrades, new power and data points, switchboard labelling, and the safety and QA checks needed to meet mining and electrical site standards.

Project Details

Keeping the Facilities Live

A big part of this job was keeping both facilities running while the upgrade was underway. We installed temporary power boards up front so the dry mess buildings could stay operational while we removed old services and worked through the new installation. That gave us a workable path through the job without shutting the facilities down.

Stripping Out the Old Services

Once temporary supply was in place, we started removing the old electrical infrastructure that no longer suited the buildings. That included redundant lighting, ageing cabling and other outdated services. Getting that stripped out properly was the first step in making room for the new fitout and avoiding clashes later in the job.

Setting Up the New Layout

With the old gear out of the way, we installed new cable containment to suit the updated layouts. This part of the job set up the rest of the works, because the new lighting, power and data all had to be run where they actually made sense for the way the facilities had been rebuilt. It also helped keep the installation neat and easier to follow once completed.

Upgrading the Lighting

The lighting package changed these spaces the most. We installed LED track lighting, emergency lighting, PIR sensors and architectural wall lights across the upgraded areas. It gave the facilities a more current setup and brought the lighting into line with the new fitout, while still covering the practical side of the job from general use through to emergency requirements.

Finishing the Power and Data

Along with the lighting works, we installed new GPOs, isolators and data outlets to suit the revised layouts. We also updated the switchboard labelling as part of the final works. These are the details that help finish a job properly, especially in a live site environment where services need to be easy to identify and laid out in a way that suits ongoing use.

Working to Mining Site Standards

From start to finish, the job was carried out with electrical safety, QA and site compliance front of mind. On a mining job like this, every part of the install has to be done properly, checked properly and handed over in a condition that meets the site standard. That applied across the whole job, from temporary power through to final fit-off.

Project Challenges and Solutions

Working Around an Operational Facility

The main challenge was getting through a major upgrade while both dry mess facilities still needed to stay in use. Temporary power was what made that possible. It let us keep the buildings supplied while we removed the old infrastructure and staged the new installation through the upgraded areas.

Working Through Older Infrastructure

Jobs like this always take a bit of care once you start opening up older services. We had to work through what was there, remove what was no longer needed, and make sure the new containment, lighting, power and data lined up with the upgraded layout. Taking it in stages helped keep the job organised and kept the install moving in the right order.

Matching the Electrical Work to the New Fitout

This was not just a straight service replacement. The electrical work had to suit the updated look and use of the dry mess spaces as well. Lighting positions, outlet locations and final fit-off all had to line up with the rebuilt areas, so a lot of the job came down to getting the details right and leaving the finished spaces looking properly put together.

Client Feedback

The response to the completed upgrade has been positive, especially around the improved lighting, the tidier service layout and the overall finish of the dry mess areas. Once the old infrastructure was removed and the new installation was in place, the facilities felt more in step with the upgraded spaces and ready for day-to-day site use.
