The project was executed over an intensive five-week period, encompassing day, night, and weekend work to ensure timely completion while the store remained fully operational.

Project Details

As part of its commitment to enhancing energy efficiency and customer experience, Woolworths undertook a refrigeration upgrade at its Albany location. The project involved installing new glass door freezers and remote condensers to improve product preservation and display. MECS Electrical & Controls was tasked with executing the electrical installations necessary for these upgrades, ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing store operations.

Execution Strategy:

Planning and Coordination:
Developed a detailed project plan in collaboration with Woolworths management to outline work schedules, resource allocation, and safety protocols. Special attention was given to maintaining store operations, with work scheduled during off-peak hours and coordinated to minimize customer inconvenience.

Electrical Installation:

Glass Door Freezers: Installed wiring and power connections for the new glass door freezers, ensuring compliance with safety standards and optimal performance.

Remote Condensers: Executed the electrical installations for the remote condensers, including power supply and control wiring, to ensure efficient operation and integration with existing systems.

Safety and Quality Assurance:
Implemented stringent safety measures to protect workers and customers during installation activities. Conducted regular quality checks to ensure all installations met Woolworths’ standards and regulatory requirements.

Testing and Commissioning:
Performed comprehensive testing of all electrical installations to verify functionality and safety. Collaborated with Woolworths’ technical teams to commission the new refrigeration units, ensuring they were fully operational and integrated with existing store systems.

Challenges and Solutions:

  • Maintaining Store Operations:
Executing the project without disrupting daily store activities was paramount. This was achieved by scheduling work during night shifts and weekends, and by setting up safe work zones to separate construction activities from customer areas.
  • Tight Timeline:
The five-week project duration required efficient time management and resource allocation. MECS employed a dedicated project management approach, with continuous monitoring and adjustment of schedules to ensure timely completion.
  • Safety Considerations:
Working in an active retail environment necessitated rigorous safety protocols. Regular safety briefings, hazard assessments, and the use of protective barriers ensured a safe environment for both workers and customers.

Outcome:

The refrigeration upgrade at Woolworths Albany was completed successfully within the stipulated five-week timeframe. The new glass door freezers and remote condensers are fully operational, contributing to improved energy efficiency and enhanced product display. The project was executed with minimal disruption to store operations, maintaining a safe environment for customers and staff throughout the process.
